A Ray of Light in the Night: Amser I Mi Project Case Study

The Amser I Mi Project by Ray of Light Cancer Support, funded by the Welsh Government and Carers Trust, is designed to provide much-needed respite for individuals in a caring role for cancer patients. This case study highlights the impact of the project on a dedicated carer who received a voucher for an overnight stay, offering a refreshed break.

Note: In order to comply with GDPR regulations and to protect the privacy of individuals involved, a fictitious name, “Emma Thompson,” has been used in this case study. The details of the situation and the impact of the Amser I Mi Project, however, accurately reflect the experiences of individuals benefiting from Ray of Light Cancer Support.

Case Study:

Name: Emma Thomson

Relationship: Full-time carer for her husband, James

Emma has been the primary carer for her husband James, who is undergoing cancer treatment. The demanding nature of caring had taken a toll on Emma’s well-being, both physically and emotionally. Ray of Light Cancer Support recognised the need for carers like Emma to have a break and provided her with an overnight stay voucher through the Amser I Mi Project.

Emma, initially hesitant to take a break, decided to utilise the voucher and booked a relaxing overnight stay at a local retreat. This break not only allowed her to physically distance herself from the daily caring routine but also provided an opportunity for emotional rejuvenation.

Benefits Received:

Much-Needed Respite: The overnight stay offered Emma a much-needed break from the daily responsibilities of caring, allowing her to recharge and regain her strength.

Refreshed Perspective: The break provided Emma with a refreshed perspective on her caring role. It allowed her to reflect on her own needs, ensuring she could continue to provide the best care for her husband.

Emotional Rejuvenation: Emma returned from her overnight stay with a renewed sense of emotional well-being. The break helped alleviate stress and anxiety, enabling her to better cope with the challenges of caring for a loved one with cancer.

Enhanced Ability to Provide Care: Emma’s brief respite translated into enhanced caring capabilities. She returned to her role with increased patience, empathy, and a strengthened ability to navigate the complexities of James’s treatment.

Feedback from Emma:

“The Amser I Mi Project has been a true blessing. The overnight stay allowed me to step away, clear my mind, and take care of myself. I came back better equipped to provide the care James needs. Ray of Light Cancer Support gave me not just a break but a ray of hope and support during a challenging time.”

Emma’s time with the Amser I Mi Project highlights how important these programs are for helping carers. By providing respite and support, organisations like Ray of Light Cancer Support contribute significantly to the overall well-being of both carers and the individuals they care for. Emma’s story is a testament to the positive impact that a little time away can have on the resilience and strength of those in caring roles.

Navigating and Managing Grief and Loss Through Cancer

Cancer is a life-altering experience, not only for the person diagnosed but also for our loved ones. Managing our grief and loss can be a complex and challenging journey, but with support from loved ones, skilled organisations, and self-care practices, we can hope to find strength and healing amidst the pain. Coping with the emotional pain and navigating through grief can seem overwhelming, but it is possible to find solace and healing amidst the challenging times.

What is grief? Grief is an inherent reaction to losing something or someone dear to you. It involves the emotional anguish experienced when a loved one or cherished possession is no longer with you. The ache of bereavement can be utterly overwhelming, causing a range of challenging and unforeseen emotions such as shock, anger, disbelief, guilt, and deep sorrow. Furthermore, grief can detrimentally impact your physical well-being, making it challenging to engage in activities like sleeping, eating, or focusing. These responses to loss are typical, and the magnitude of your grief tends to increase as the loss becomes more significant.

This Years National Grief Awareness week is based around better, together. The aim is to bring communities together and connect us to make us feel less alone in our feelings. Grief can be very hard to discuss with others and can cause us to want to hold it in and keep it all to ourselves. But we often find that discussing our grief with others can be much more beneficial for our mind and the healing process. At Ray of Light Cancer Support we can offer a safe, non-judgmental space to talk, access peer support, learn new skills and make new connections in the community. Please look at our ‘groups’ page on our website to see what we offer.
Our Groups – Ray of Light Wales

We also offer a telephone befriending service specifically designed for anyone affected by cancer. Whether you are currently undergoing treatment, caring for someone with cancer, or have experienced the loss of a loved one, we are here to provide the companionship and the support you need. You can refer yourself and find further information on our website.

Telephone Befriending – Ray of Light Wales

Grieving can be very complex, especially if we were in the caring role also. This loss can be multi-dimensional and the feelings we may have can sometimes confuse us and make us feel bad. We may feel relief, caring for someone that we have seen in pain and change due to the illness now at peace and the responsibility that we have had on us may have been very challenging to manage.

We may also grieve the caring role we were in. The caring responsibility can take up a lot of our time and our thoughts and when that has gone it may be a shock to no longer have these responsibilities.

Here are 7 strategies that may help you to manage grief and loss that could be experienced during the cancer journey.

  1. Acknowledge Emotions:

Grief can manifest in various emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, fear, and even relief. It is crucial to recognise and acknowledge these emotions rather than suppressing or denying them. By giving yourself permission to feel, you allow yourself to start the healing process and eventually find acceptance.

  1. Seek Support:

Dealing with cancer-related grief and loss can feel isolating but remember that you are not alone. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups who can provide empathy, understanding, and a listening ear. Joining support groups specifically designed for cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones can be immensely beneficial in finding a sense of community and shared experiences.

  1. Practice Self-Care:

Caring for yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is essential during this challenging time. Engage in activities that bring joy, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Regular exercise, nutritious eating, getting enough sleep, and practicing mindfulness or meditation can help to reduce stress and promote emotional well-being.

  1. Communicate Openly:

Open, honest, and compassionate communication is key when dealing with grief and loss. Talk to your loved ones about your feelings, concerns, and fears. Share memories, stories, or any cherished moments with the person affected by cancer. Open discussion encourages a support system that can provide comfort and strength during tough times.

  1. Seek Counselling:

Professional counselling or therapy can provide a safe space to navigate complex emotions and receive guidance from trained therapists experienced in cancer-related grief and loss. Counselling can help individuals develop healthy coping mechanisms, process emotions, and find new perspectives on grief.

  1. Honour and Remember:

Remembering and honouring the person lost to cancer is a fundamental part of the healing process. Create rituals or meaningful activities that celebrate the life of your loved one. This may include visiting their favourite places, organising a memorial service, or engaging in activities that were important to them. Opening up about your loved one’s impact on your life and sharing memories can also bring comfort and closure.

  1. Embrace Life After Loss:

Moving forward after loss does not mean forgetting; it means finding a way to live a fulfilling life while cherishing memories. It’s okay to experience happiness and laughter amidst grief. Look for new opportunities, build new relationships, and allow yourself to find joy in small moments. By embracing life, you honour the memory of your loved one.

Grief and loss are natural responses to the challenges cancer brings. Remember, healing takes time and is unique to every individual. Be kind to yourself and lean on the support available to you.

Giving Back One Book at a Time: B Beautiful Raises Funds for Ray of Light

Anne Swallow our Community Project Co-Ordinator works part time and also volunteers for Ray of Light Cancer Support too.  She had a brilliant idea to collaborate with our local community to support Ray of Light Cancer Support. Anne’s enthusiasm and creativity have brought about a fantastic partnership with the local hair salon B Beautiful in Gabalfa, Cardiff.

Together, they organised a book sale, with Manager Louise and Stylist Maria generously offering their support. This collaboration has been nothing short of amazing. The community rallied together to purchase books and the funds have been used towards refreshments on our Summer Trips, Easter Eggs and Christmas selection boxes.

The success of this initiative is a testament to the incredible power of community, kindness, and the unwavering dedication of support. We are deeply grateful to Anne for her innovative idea and to Louise and Maria for their generous contribution for their overwhelming support.

This inspiring venture not only has raised funds for our cause but also brought the community closer together. It is heart-warming to see what can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal.

From all at Ray of Light Cancer Support, a huge thank you, Anne, Louise and Maria, for your outstanding efforts. We look forward to continuing this journey of support as we work to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about this devastating disease. Breast cancer affects millions of people worldwide, both women and men, making it vital to inform ourselves and others about the importance of early detection and prevention.

Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. According to Breast Cancer Now, around 55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. In Wales, every year around 2,800 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is that Breast cancer survival is improving and has doubled in the past 40 years in the UK due improved treatment and care, earlier detection through screening and faster diagnosis. An estimated 600,000 people are alive in the UK after a diagnosis of breast cancer. This is predicted to rise to 1.2 million in 2030.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is as an opportunity to advise people about the importance of self-exams and regular mammograms. Self-exams allow individuals to become familiar with their breasts and identify changes, such as lumps, swelling, or nipple discharge. Mammograms are X-rays of the breast that can detect cancer even before physical symptoms are present. The NHS Breast Screening Programme invites all women from the age of 50 to 70 registered with a GP for screening every 3 years.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not just about advocating awareness and prevention of the disease but also about supporting those currently battling the disease and anyone affected, including carers, friends and family. Ray of Light aim to show compassion, empathy, and encouragement to anyone who’s life has been affected by this devastating disease. We have many ways in which we can offer support to people and the community, including telephone befriending, groups, events and fundraisers. To see what services, we offer have a look on our website or our social media pages, you can also contact us via email on: contactus@rayoflightwales.org.uk

While breast cancer is more commonly found among women, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. People of all ages should ensure they are regularly checking themselves for signs and proactively ensuring a healthier lifestyle to reduce chances of developing breast cancer.
As an organisation and individually we can raise awareness by sharing information and resources, having open conversations with family, friends and loved ones and educating ourselves on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and ways in which we can try to reduce breast cancer occurrence.

Together, we can make a difference and contribute to reducing breast cancer worldwide.

Spreading the festive cheer

At Ray of Light, we know that Christmas can be a tough time – especially if you have, or are caring for someone with cancer.

We work hard to support people all over South Wales, and this Christmas we wanted to spread a little joy to show people how much we care.  Last week we delivered 32 food hampers, 135 care packs to homes and hospitals, and 68 gifts to children of the families we support in the hope that a little act of kindness will go a long way. We are so grateful to Interlink RCT who funded the Acts of Kindness Gifts, and to the Capital FM & St Davids Toy Appeal for the amazing gifts we gave out to the children.
